At Online Pharmacy UK we like to keep on top of the latest treatments and products, so we're proud to be able to offer our latest discovery, FLEXISEQ. A pioneering treatment first released in early 2013, FLEXISEQ is a drug-free, water-based gel which aims to provide relief from the symptoms of osteoarthritis without any additional side-effects.
Soon after its release, FLEXISEQ received the BVDA Innovation Award 2013. It was evaluated in a comprehensive clinical trial programme where 1,675 patients were treated with FLEXISEQ in six studies. At the end of 2013 FLEXISEQ has been administered to over 6 million people and received no reported systematic side effects.
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis caused by general wear and tear on the joints, it's often a result of participating in demanding sports and activities like athletics or dancing. Joints most commonly affected are those that bear weight; the hips, spine, feet or knees. Unlike other forms of arthritis you don't tend to feel fatigued, tired or sick.
Cartilage is the body's shock absorber, a slippery material that covers the end of bones. Over time, the cartilage in weight-bearing joints can be broken down, causing it to get rougher and thinner. The bone underneath becomes thicker and grows outwards, creating growths called 'osteophytes'. These growths make the bones of the joints look knobbly.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, causing joint pain to over 8 and a half million people. It's more common over the age of 50 but can occur in younger people too, especially if they are overweight, play demanding sports, or have suffered a joint injury.
The science behind FLEXISEQ
The majority of osteoarthritis treatments on the market, such as acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and narcotics, contain an active pharmaceutical ingredient. FLEXISEQ does not. This absence of pharmaceutical drugs means an absence of drug-to-drug interaction, allowing patients to use FLEXISEQ alongside other medications without the fear of it interfering with or reacting to them.
How it works
FLEXISEQ's innovative Sequessome Technology allows patients to self-administer the gel to the affected joint. It contains millions of droplets of fat, or phospholipids, which travel through the skin and tissue and penetrate the joint. Osteoarthritis reduces the amount of phospholipids in patients, which have an essential role in lubricating the joint and are normally contained in the liquid surrounding it. FLEXISEQ reduces the amount of friction between the bones by coating the cartilage with a protective lubricant layer. In some cases this has resulted in increased mobility and reduced pain.
Pain relief, without the side effects
The most exciting prospect that FLEXISEQ offers to people who suffer from the symptoms of osteoarthritis is the opportunity to experience relief from the chronic pain they are suffering without any of the well-recognised side effects associated with the drugs used to treat osteoarthritis.
