In most cases, prevention is better than cure. But how would you feel about using a certain bloodsucking critter to keep yourself healthy? In this month's Revolting Remedies, we look at the use of leech therapy for bloodletting.
What is it exactly?
Bloodletting is the withdrawal of blood from a patient to cure or prevent illness and disease. In ancient times and right up until the 19th century, blood and other bodily fluids were known as "humors" that needed to be kept in proper balance to maintain health. Initially, surgeons would open the vein of a patient for the bloodletting process. Since the lancets used were often dirty and came with an increased risk of infection, this wasn't common practice. The alternative? Leeches! With over 300 teeth and a natural anaesthetic in their saliva, leeches fast became the champions of the bloodletting world!
When did people do this?
Leech therapy dates back almost 3,500 years ago to the ancient Egyptians. It soared in popularity during the 18th century and is still practiced today in some parts of the world.
Why on earth would they do it?
The uses of the lowly leech were never ending, from haemorrhoids to headaches, bloodletting was considered one of the best preventions for disease and illness. Forget a trip to the day spa to replenish and relax, a trip to the local leech farm was considered far more beneficial to your health. Leeches could also be used to suck the pus out of boils – delicious!
How did they do it?
The leech would be applied to the skin of a patient, the gluttonous little bloodsucker would then latch onto the vein and feed. After taking it's fill of blood, the swollen leech would release its grip and drop off. However, the leach would kindly produce a coagulant to help close the wound.
Thanks, but no thanks! Any alternatives?
As leeches were mainly used to prevent disease and illness, the modern alternative would be to ensure that you are taking vitamins and supplements. If your diet lacks essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, iron or folic acid, you may have a vitamin deficiency that could contribute to developing a chronic condition. At Online Pharmacy UK, we offer a variety of vitamins that ensure your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs to keep up with your busy schedules. Plus, we're pretty sure that taking a simple tablet would be a tad more appealing than attaching a leech to your vein!
